Anglia Ruskin University is to treat visitors to an exhibition of specially selected items reflecting innovative scientific or aesthetic design ideas.

The exhibition, entitled Design Icons, will feature 20 items chosen from over 90 hopeful submissions.

Among the items to go on show will be a table that uses stored moss to charge a battery through the process of photosynthesis. Designed, with the assistance of scientists, by Carlos Peralta and Alex Driver, the inclusion of the moss table in the exhibition was determined as the result of a public vote to find the ‘People’s Choice’.

Other items in the exhibition will include the Easy Breathe asthma inhaler; the Evian Action Water Bottle; the iCAP Spectrometer; and the Dulux Paint PaintPod Roller System.

Commenting on the exhibition, one of the selection panel, Tim Evans, director of Think Product Design, said:

‘We had a number of criteria for selecting the final products including innovation, market success and pure design aesthetics’

Evans emphasised that

‘what’s particularly exciting about the products we’ve selected is their diversity’

adding, however, that it was

‘just as important to select products that would interest a cross section of the population’

The Design Icons exhibition will take place at the university’s East Road Ruskin Gallery between 8th and 23rd February, between the hours of 10am and 5pm. The moss table however is only scheduled to be on display at the exhibition between 8th and 10th February.
